Which day of the week do people shop online?

I have been running affiliate sites for over 2 years now, and i have started to notice some interesting trends. Like the fact that the beginning of months are normally better (due to people being paid?) and that the summer months are the quiet ones (school holidays, summer holidays etc..). Something else i have always taken for granted is that noone buys on a Friday, and that everyone seems to buy on a Monday! But all this has only been theory until now…

I decided to look at the statistics across all of my sites (mostly retail), from the 1st of January, until the 30th of September and then take the average profit for each day of the week. And the results look like this… (Please note, these are not my actual daily profits. I have changed the highest day to 100, and based everything else on that.)

Monday 95.1
Tuesday 79.49
Wednesday 81.48
Thursday 89.25
Friday 70.51
Saturday 73.95
Sunday 100

The table basically shows that if i make £100 on a Sunday, then on average i will make £81.48 on a Wednesday or £73.95 on a Saturday. I have also put the data into graph format to help visualise the trend.

Things i found interesting:

  • There is a HUGE drop between the best day (Sunday) and the worst (Friday). On average, if i make £100 worth of commissions on a Sunday, then i will make nearly £30 less on a Friday! Maybe it is worth reducing the ppc spend on a Friday? But then on the other hand, maybe the people who click on Friday go on to buy on a Sunday…
  • Sunday is the peak (closely followed by Monday). Maybe people need to buy themselves a “pickmeup” before going back to work? Do people use the weekend to browse, and then buy on a Sunday night?
  • The week peaks again on a Thursday. I guess people have been browsing potential purchases all week at work, and then make the decision to buy on a Thursday (as they will be heading out on a Friday?).

At least now i don’t need to worry when the sales are slow to come in on a Friday! I would be interested to know if other people see similar trends in their statistics…

Most certainly not – Being German means I am genetically disadvantaged on the areas of humour, sarcasm and irony and I’d still love to see that pie chart.

    Interesting stats.

We’ve only been running a few months but the daily sales profile of our stats over that period is completely different from yours. Our busiest days, sometimes by far, are Thursday and Friday. The weekends are our quietest, which would seem to indicate that most of our customers visit the site whilst at work. And as for PPC spend we’re currently thinking of reducing our weekend spend and redirecting the money into Thrus/Fri. We’ve also plotted the hours of the day people click through the site and found that sales are higher in the morning and in particular between 11:00-12:00.

Thanks. This is just what I was looking for.

It would also be nice to see an equivalent for spend at different times of the day.

Facebook ads allows targeting on set days and set times (such as Mon-Fri over lunch hours)

This is really useful and i like the graphs :)
